Data Mesh | At a Glance

The world of data is not slowing down, in fact, it’s speeding up. There is so much to learn and it seems that every other week there’s a new data initiative that you simply MUST adopt. It’s common knowledge that to be a truly data driven company and to stay competitive, you need to harness your data effectively. You need to stay on top of trends. One of the most recent initiatives we’ve seen popping up is data mesh. But what is it? Do you need it? And how can it be used to facilitate better analytics? Let’s break it down.

What is data mesh

Data mesh is a type of data platform architecture and strategic framework that aims to make data accessible and readily available to business users.

It focuses on the four core principles:

  1. Domain-driven ownership: Data ownership is shifted into the hands of individual domain teams who own the data end to end.
  2. Data as a product: Domain teams are responsible for maintaining, updating, or depreciating data to ensure its quality and accuracy, while at the same time ensuring that it is discoverable and usable.
  3. Self-service infrastructure: Platform and tools must be self-service and easy for the domain teams to use independently, without the need for additional technical expertise.
  4. Federated governance: While data governance standards are defined centrally, domain teams still have the autonomy and resources to define and implement these policies when developing and sharing their data products.

It directly links the entire hierarchy of data development including owners, producers and consumers. The aim of data mesh is to improve outcomes by providing an entirely connected approach that allows businesses to become truly data-driven.

How does it work?

To utilise a data mesh architecture you need to decentralise your approach. Instead of a traditional monolithic architecture, you’ll need to distribute your data into separate databases for each domain/department. This allows each domain to manage smaller, decentralised components for highly scalable applications.

By doing this you enable different teams to perform data analysis across each other’s data. Each team will still be responsible for their own data, but they can ingest each other’s data to perform their own analysis.

Why should I use data mesh?

Enabling your teams to become data-driven and democratising analytics is always useful. Moving away from a monolithic approach empowers your users to deliver better data insights at a much faster speed. Instead of waiting days (or even weeks), on specialised teams to create the necessary data pipelines for the required datasets, data mesh ensures that data is maintained by the domain experts themselves and is available in the right format and at the right time.

Do I need another tech provider to facilitate it?

Not necessarily. To decentralise your data, it will need to be stored in a way that allows users to access the right data. In our experience, the easiest way to do this is by using the cloud.

As a Snowflake Premier Partner, we know the power of their platform and how it allows you to be flexible to you can create a warehouse architecture that’s suitable for your business’s use case. In Snowflake’s own words, “Domain teams can use Snowflake to easily retrieve using SQL or code for a variety of functions. With elastic scalability and isolated multi-cluster compute, each domain team gets access to the dedicated resources they need without impacting performance or concurrency for other teams.” It’s possible to get similar results using other cloud products but it is a different process for each platform.

It’s also important to note that not all data should be accessed by all people. To harness data mesh without risking the security of your data or degradation of its quality you’ll need a strong data governance approach. Again, you don’t necessarily need new tech to do this but platforms like Collibra can help you to ensure your data is protected throughout its journey.

Can you help me enable data mesh in my organisation?
